Abstract

The objective of the research is to determine the predictive capacity of the LATCH scale regarding the success of exclusive breastfeeding during the first two postnatal months in term neonates. The sample consisted of 25 mother–infant dyads, with neonates between 37.1 and 42.0 weeks of gestational age, born between August 31 and December 21, 2021. In the first phase of the study, breastfeeding subprocesses were quantified intramurally using the LATCH scale, followed by a second phase of follow-up through technological means to assess the status of exclusive breastfeeding and its correlation with the LATCH score. It was found that dyads scoring below 5 points were characterized by an 80% premature cessation of exclusive breastfeeding by two months of postnatal age. Dyads scoring between 6 and 7 points formed a group with a moderate risk of cessation (1 in 3 infants discontinued exclusive breastfeeding). The LATCH scale, in terms of exclusive breastfeeding, exhibited an 80% predictive failure factor at two months of postnatal age for dyads scoring five points or less, which was also associated with the need for hospitalization. These findings highlight the necessity for constant observation and consideration of hospital admission to ensure adequate intake for the newborn.
