Abstract

The Reading, Writing, and Academic Speech Center at the Santiago de Cali University (CELOA), is it representative program within the Health faculty, specifically in the program of Speech Language Pathology. The Center’s objectives are: to develop competencies of communication in reading writing and academic speech specific to the university setting; and to increase the direct impact on the vulnerable target population of the University especially in the areas of communication and language, in order to obtain increased completion and success of academic programs.
The CELOA is the result of the development of five experience- based phases: 1. Identification of the needs and implementation of the services offered; 2. Formalization of the formative practicum program for Speech Language Pathology students during their senior year; 3. Identifying future needs and services and re-structuring the current program to better serve those needs; 4. Increase student awareness involvement; and 5. Toward research, implementation, and improvement.
The first phase began in 2010, with the study of the core curriculum courses of the Speech Language Pathology program and its students. This study yielded 39 students who had a greater failing rate of core courses and required interventions and follow-up. By mid- 2014 the program include 104 students with constant interventions and follow up. Through evaluations and classroom observations, it was established that 60% of the students receiving services, had a restriction in their linguistic code. These findings allowed the center to focus the intervention strategies offered for the targeted student population.
Some conclusions to date include: Thirty Speech Language Pathology Professional graduates with new competencies in the area of university populations; the increase of student awareness and involvement; the development of competencies in order to provide services for writing, reading, and academic speech by speech language pathology students; and The creation of measurable targets and objectives for the University which focus on the difficulty and issues surrounding communication skills of its student population.
