Vocabulario comprensivo y habilidades pragmáticas en síndrome de Down: ¿son dependientes?

Comprehensive vocabulary and pragmatic skills in down syndrome: are they interdependent?

Dentro de las dificultades de lenguaje que presentan las personas con Síndrome de Down (SD), algunos estudios apuntan a que tanto el vocabulario como las habilidades pragmáticas pueden ser uno de sus puntos fuertes. No obstante, poco se conoce acerca de la relación entre estas áreas, especialmente en la edad adulta. Por tanto, el objetivo de este estudio fue conocer si el nivel de vocabulario comprensivo y la pragmática son dependientes entre sí en este tipo de población a través de un estudio experimental. La muestra estuvo compuesta por 51 personas con Síndrome de Down de habla castellana divididas en dos grupos: adolescentes y adultos. Los instrumentos de evaluación utilizados fueron la prueba Peabody y el Protocolo Rápido de Evaluación Pragmática Revisado (PREP-R) que evaluaba muestras de lenguaje a través de conversaciones grabadas en video. Los resultados mostraron que las personas con SD mostraron un buen nivel de habilidades pragmática aunque presentaban un retraso significativo del vocabulario con respecto a su edad cronológica destacable, sin diferencias entre ambos grupos de edad. No obstante, tanto el nivel de vocabulario comprensivo como las habilidades pragmáticas (y sus correspondientes subáreas) correlacionan entre sí. Estos datos nos llevan a plantear la necesidad de intervenciones lingüísticas basadas en ambas áreas de cara a mejorar la comunicación de adolescentes y adultos en Síndrome de Down.
