Comprehensive vocabulary and pragmatic skills in down syndrome: are they interdependent?
Vocabulario comprensivo y habilidades pragmáticas en síndrome de Down: ¿son dependientes?
Main Article Content
Among the language difficulties experienced by individuals with Down syndrome (DS), some studies suggest that both vocabulary and pragmatic skills may be relative strengths. However, little is known about the relationship between these areas, particularly in adulthood. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine whether receptive vocabulary level and pragmatic ability are interdependent in this population, through an experimental design. The sample consisted of 51 Spanish-speaking individuals with Down syndrome, divided into two groups: adolescents and adults. The assessment instruments used were the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test and the Revised Rapid Protocol for Pragmatic Assessment (PREP-R), which evaluated language samples from video-recorded conversations. The results showed that individuals with DS demonstrated a good level of pragmatic skills, although they exhibited a significant vocabulary delay relative to their chronological age, with no differences between age groups. Nevertheless, both receptive vocabulary and pragmatic skills (including their respective subcomponents) were found to be correlated. These findings highlight the need for language interventions focused on both areas to enhance communication in adolescents and adults with Down syndrome.
