The present review article describes the systems and strategies of augmentative and alternative communication used in intensive care, participating interlocutors, benefits of their use, language functions for which they are used, the importance of the professional in speech therapy as a guide for communication processes and level of patient satisfaction with communication. Other aspects related to communication with the patient must be taken into account to bring multiple benefits, but mainly the recognition of the patient as an active subject in the health care process, complementary therapies are not pharmacological, the need and importance of training courses in communication in the clinical environment.
