End of Life Care.
Cuidados al Final de la Vida. Analysis from the speech and Language Therapist practice.
Main Article Content
Abstract: End-of-life care has evolved conceptually and practically, including the type of professionals currently involved in this area of work. Speech and Language therapists practice has historically been related to the intervention of communication and swallowing difficulties, however, when accompanying people in their dying process, it is necessary to diversify this conception. For this reason, this article reviews topics related to end-of-life care, seeking to provide theoretical and practical support in this regard. Relevant aspects for the intervention are highlighted, such as the health model that underlies the interventions carried out (biomedical - biopsychosocial), the importance of self-knowledge and the role played by the professional’s emotions in the therapeutic process.
Finally, reference is made to important points related to the specific clinical intervention at the speech and language therapy level, seeking to expand the understanding and the limits of the approach to people with communication and swallowing difficulties (feeding) at the end of their life, hoping to make explicit the diversity of the actions that can be performed in the accompaniment of the afore mentioned population.
