Relationship Between Breastfeeding, Orofacial and Communicative Development
Relación entre Lactancia Materna, Desarrollo Orofacial y Comunicación Temprana Scoping review
Main Article Content
Introduction: Breastfeeding is recognized as the most effective way to ensure the health and survival of infants, providing not only nutritional benefits but also advantages in communication and oromotor development. Objective: To analyze the benefits of breastfeeding in relation to the orofacial and communicative development of infants. Methodology: An exploratory systematic review was conducted to synthesize existing evidence on the topic, following PRISMA guidelines. The review included publications from 2020 onward, sourced from the PubMed and Clinical Key databases. Results: A total of 30 publications met the criteria of relevance and clarity and were evaluated using the AMSTAR tool, achieving moderate to high confidence ratings. The findings indicate that the benefits of breastfeeding extend beyond nutrition and general health, significantly influencing communicative and oromotor development. Conclusions: Breastfeeding is identified as a neuroprotective factor in child development, enriching orofacial functions by strengthening structures, promoting harmonious growth, and preparing the infant for essential functions such as breathing, sucking, swallowing, chewing, and speech. Additionally, it positively impacts early communication by fostering mother-infant interaction
