Meaningfulness in sense of coherence as a key factor in auditory perception and functional balance in adults: correlational evidence from a salutogenic perspective

La significatividad del sentido de coherencia en la percepción auditiva y el equilibrio funcional en adultos: evidencia correlacional desde la salutogénesis

Main Article Content

Abstract

Health is understood as a dynamic process supported by personal and contextual resources that enable individuals to cope with everyday stressors. From a salutogenic perspective, sense of coherence is considered a key determinant of well-being. Hearing and balance are essential for autonomy in daily life. The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between sense of coherence, self-reported auditory functioning, and self-reported functional balance in activities of daily living among adults residing in the province of Córdoba, Argentina. A quantitative, correlational, cross-sectional study was conducted with 170 adults, who completed the Sense of Coherence Scale, the Amsterdam Inventory for Auditory Disability and Handicap, and the Vestibular Disorders Activities of Daily Living Scale. Results showed that global sense of coherence was not significantly associated with auditory functioning, but was significantly related to functional balance. The meaningfulness dimension was the only component associated with both variables. These findings highlight the role of psychosocial resources in sensory functioning. Strengthening sense of coherence, particularly meaningfulness, may contribute to improved functional performance and autonomy in daily life.
